Vehicle Description
1 of only 3 Prototypes made, 1962 Saab Quantum 3 Roadster with 13k Miles featured in Red with Black Interior. Drivetrain features the ultra reliable 3-Cylinder 2-Stroke mated to a 4-Speed manual transmission. The Quantum was the brainchild Walter Kern, an MIT trained nuclear physicist, who was very involved in amateur racing. His frustration was with oil starvation and decided to build his own race car. The fiberglass body was built by Atkins & Merit of Framingham, MA in the sprit of the Jaguar E-type. For the engine, he chose the SAAB 3-cylinder 2-stroke that was featured in the Saab 93 sedan because it was lightweight, powerful, reliable, and had so oil sump. His success racing the Quantum, including a first in class at Thompson Speedway in 1960, led to interest by SAAB. The first showing was at the New York Auto Show in 1962 with an estimated sale price of $2,995. It received great reviews and was highly anticipated by the dealers but in the end it never made to production. There were 3 made, the first is still disassembled in Sweden, and this is 1 of the only 2 that are still on the road. Designated by SAAB as No. 102, this vehicle spent most of its life in California until 2001 when it was purchased by a Hingham native who's Father had help build the body. The miles are extremely low, 13k, and it wears its all original patina well. Service and sorting were just recently performed hear at EAS. This a rare opportunity to buy highly functional, collector quality SAAB Prototype with an 30-Day EAS Mechanical Warranty!
