Vehicle Description
Well Serviced, Extremely Clean, Rare, 1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E-16V featured in Smoke Silver (702) with Black Leather Interior. The power plant is a 2.3 Liter 4-Cylinder with 4 valves per cylinder designed in collaboration with Cosworth of England. Cosworth developed the cylinder head made from light alloy using a unique casting process that brought with it dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, meaning 16 valves total. It was developed to be the "largest that could practically be fitted into the combustion chamber". The project was originally intended for Road Rallying Vehicles, but ended up powering the homologation street version to qualify for DTM racing. Due to their performance, the 16-Valve cars were different from the other 190 models. The body kit on the 2.3-16 reduced the drag coefficient to 0.32, one of the lowest CD values on a four-door sedan of the time, also reducing lift at speed. The steering ratio was quicker and the steering wheel smaller than the standard 190Es, and the fuel tank was enlarged from 55 to 70 L. The Getrag 5-speed manual gearbox was unique to the 16-valve and featured a dog-leg change pattern, shifting down and left for first. Historically speaking it had sparked the European horsepower arms race as BMW was developing its E30 M3 at the same time.
This particular 201 chassis has been a west coast vehicle for most its life and has been mechanically restored here at EAS, including: replacement of rear suspension pump and height valve, new radiator, thermostat, and aux. water pump, new brakes all around, new exhaust, valve adjustment and 75K service, replacement of rear shocks and accumulator, rear thrust arms, new center link and front tie rods, new sway bar bushings, and a new A/C compressor and receiver drier, and updated 16" wheels with new Michelin tires. This a fully mechanically sorted, rust free W201 that is ready for the open road. Hagerty says values are rising on these "youngtimer" vehicles and that it is a good time to own one. Buy this classic with confidence with a 60 day EAS mechanical warranty!
